Going Mental

Yes...me...I'm going mental.

I thought I had made the decision, finally, to get another dog.
Molly has been gone for 8 months now...and I know I can give another dog a wonderful, loving home.

I've picked him out. I've named him. I am supposed to pick him up Saturday. I've convinced my parents to adopt one of his sibs...just like we planned.

And I'm having second, third, fourth and fifth thoughts.
And above all, I have to ask myself,

Why can't I ever be happy with what I have?
Why must there always be "something else?"

I don't know what to do. I am so afraid that Gus and Mag will not react well to a new pup...that over the last eight months, they have become so accustomed to being a pair instead of a pack, that they won't be happy with triangulating the situation.

Or maybe this will be the best thing ever. The ambiguity is killing me.

I saw a client yesterday who is struggling with ambiguity too...and I've decided that it is really a challenge to the psyche because it keeps you from taking the next step...it is what makes you stuck.

So I'm stuck and I've got three days to decide what I'm going to do...yes I know there will always be an opportunity for other dogs who need homes...I just wish someone or something would give me a sign...(hint hint hint)

On another note, I'll blog tomorrow about my final package from my secret pal...

Any advice about the situation would be appreciated...

Wow, you hit me right between the eyes with your post today and have given me lots of food for thought.

I wish I had pearls of wisdom for you - but I don't.

I might ask this question - do you truly want a new dog - or do you want the dog because you think you have to have another dog.

Have a most blessed Thanksgiving!

Must be that time of year. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my newest rescue -- an 11 year old pug -- and watching my other 2 pugs snoozing and wondering if I am doing the right thing. Yes, it will be craziness for a few days until the pack settles, but I have found that dogs really do love being in a pack. They enjoy the company and the spirit and the energy. Sadly, there will always be dogs who need homes. I commend you for opening your heart and home to this new addition. Welcome him/her with open arms and open heart and your pack will follow your lead.

I don't know if I have any good advice to give you except that when something is meant to be, it just happens.

I think in all life situations we get 'comfortable' and we are happy. Human nature makes us want more - it's healthy and it helps us to grow. But stepping out of our comfort zones is not so easy.

Our cat died on Thanksgiving two years ago. We decided not go get another one for a variety of reasons. I do want to get another dog though. I know that when the time is right our next dog will come to us - just like our first one did. He is amazing. And that is part of why I am a bit cautious about getting another dog. I don't know if another one will fit in with him, or ever be as "good" as he is. But I am willing to try when the time comes.

So in the end I would say to go for it! It sounds like a great opportunity for you and your parents. And you are so patient with animals. I "heard" your patience on the podcast with your puppy dogs.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

More doggies are always a good thing. Sometimes HARD at first, but always good. I recently brought home two kittens (to a houseful of 3 dogs) and I don't even LIKE cats. They needed homes and they are really a handful. In the end I'm glad I brought them home (I think) even with all the bumps in the road.

I know that bringing another animal into the house is hard - not only because of logistics, but also because of the reality that pets move through our lives. It can be sobering, but the joys far outweigh the sorrows.

Best to you!

I say you should get the dog. You obviously have a lot of love to pass around to your doggies, so why not let another one in on the lovin? Plus, when we got our second basset hound (a rescue)- it was the best decision. He is the strangest but funniest and cutest dog I've ever met.

I think that you should go with your heart. The other dogs will adjust, most dogs always like more to add to the pack. I understand you issue since I just put down my dog of 15 years this month and just couldn't face doing this again yet. I wish you lots of love and know that you will do what is best for your and your family.
